nursing is bullshit

Top ten reasons why nursing is such complete bullshit:

1) In what other job are you expected be okay with being verbally abused?

2) In what other job, is the leadership so bad?

3) In what other job are you expected to go hours without a break and be okay with it?

4) In what other job are you asked to give dope to a junkie?

5) In what other job are you supposed to try and understand and empathize with someone who is threatening you?

6) In what other job do you get 2 dollars more an hour to be in charge of a place where peoples lives can be on the line?

7) In what other job are you physically, emotionally, mentally exhausted at the end of most days?

8) In what other job could you get a life threatening disease but are given no raise for a year?

9) In what other job are you exposed to junkies, criminals, sex offenders, psychotics, neurotics on a daily basis but you only hear from the management what you do forgot to chart some piece of bullshit?

10) In what other job do the mediocre advance to leadership positions? (see 2)

And that my friends is why nursing is such complete bullshit. The end.

Sincerely,

madness
the bullshit detective

It's unbelievable to me how you do it day after day after day. I was in the ER back in the early 80s when Quaaludes alcohol were the biggies. Nowadays it's totally crazy and you don't make nearly enough money for what you do. None of you.

Thank you.

The really sad thing is that alot of similarities occur in the hospital I work in, but not particularly just nursing. I work in the pharmacy and can appply a majority of your lists to us as well

I started nursing way back when. When nurses still wore white and those god awful caps! We weren't paid so very well then... but, our patients were in love with us back then and treated us with the respect and dignity we deserved.

As I look back at the changes to medicine and nursing thru my 30+ years of nursing I have to remember how astronomical those changes have been.

Where you are and what you do today in nursing is totally off the wall. No one and I mean no one should have to put up with all the crap-ola you do in the ER.

In answer to your questions # 1,2,3,5,6,and 10: Flight Attendant. I was one for 30 years before becoming an ER nurse. Same crap, but now I am allowed to have pointy objects in my possession. Nursing is still better than being locked in a can at 40,000 feet with the unwashed masses!!

This job is so thankless. My give a damn is definitely busted except for on special occasions.

No. 10 is true in many professions, but especially in public school teaching.

could be worse...you could be the ED social worker and get paid $10/hour less in a job requiring a master's degree, doing all of the above (except actually giving out the drug goodies - mostly handing out cab passes and bus tokens instead)

Remove #4 and #8, and take away the money for #6, and you've got high school teachers!

I am a nurse and as much bad as there is, there is good. In what other job can you say "I saved a life today." or " I made someones life better."? U are a counselor,a friend,"the DR" and the nurse.

#9 Absolutely. When I'm running around in my LTC facility and haven't peed in 10 hours and the DON is breathing down my neck because I forgot to write "read back and verified" under an order.

Yeah, I get it.

Don't forget your co workers who bite, backstab and and connive. Its also the only career you train for years to fight not to take a patient.

1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, & 10 - waiting tables.

Servers also make a fraction of what nurses make, and, in this economy, often have at least as much education.

I empathize with you, but you're far from alone. Keep in mind, too, that you could go back to school in a few years and become an NP, PA, or CRNA, which are arguably some of the best gigs in the country. Nursing might not be all roses and sunshine, but nurses don't really have it so bad.

We all pretty much feel the same about our jobs. We are damn good at what we do--but we are tired--with the bullshit, the nonsense, the fight. I'm human. I genuinely care about people, but I'm human. So bitching about shit allows us to vent. Don't judge just because we are exhausted and/or burned out. Nurses do go through a lot of shit. People in many professions do, and they are all allowed to bitch and complain about it. So rock on! Bitch if necessary! Good luck with your futures. There's always webcamming! lol
