In the modern ER if you are a mental health patient we kind of treat you like an animal. (I know, I know, I'm always harping on this, but it bothers me.)
We take you and put you in a room with a cart. There is nothing else in the room out of our fear your will use it to hurt yourself or us All of your stuff, including your clothes will be taken from you. You will be watched on a camera. There is nothing to distract you in the room. You have walls to stare at, thats about it. We will throw food your way three times a day. To be honest, most of the time we will be too busy to spend much time with you.
You will stay in the room for hours, sometimes days. These days most of the time there are no psych beds. Anywhere, sometimes in the whole state.
You will have plenty of time to sit and think about what brought you there, your problems. You will also have plenty of time to get pissed off because you are sitting there for hours or days. You may lash out, run down the hall, thrown something, get out of control. Then we will restrain you and sedate you. Its like we are tranquilizing you in order to have control of you.
This is the modern day emergency room mental health experience. It isn't going to change anytime soon. It is dangerous for the patients, dangerous for the staff. The thing is, nobody cares.
You are 100% right. Unfortunately unless somehow our society starts emphasizing 'us' over 'me me me' it won't change. After all, who cares about *those* people?
ReplyDeletethe problem is insurance companies won't pay for mental health admissions very well.. Also, it is more profitable for psychiatrists to be in private practice, it's hard to find them to work i hospitals.
ReplyDeleteMy 19 year old son is bi-polar. He went into a manic phase last June. After playing in traffic, he was taken to the local hospital. No beds available in the state. He "escaped" twice from the ER. The first time he walked home, five miles, in his bare feet. The police came to our house to take him back. Not fun. The second time they caught him a couple blocks away.
ReplyDeleteThe next time he gets a manic phase, I won't call the police, or take him for a 5150. Not sure what I'll do. Mental health care is a joke.
If you are angry it means you are mentally ill and need medicine.
ReplyDeleteObviously you have no real problem accepting money to treat innocent people like animals, or you'd quit. You're responsible for the torture and nightmares you've inflicted on people. There is no excuse. You chose this job.
ReplyDeleteGrow a fucking conscience. What a fucking sick joke it is, that the people who carry out this abuse put themselves forward as some kind of advocate?
Oh "it bothers you" that YOU treat people like animals. Here's a fucking idea, quit!
yeah I think this "madness" chaaracter is some kind of sadist who got the job because she enjoys torturing people. I'm glad some of you are starting to catch on. Its time to call this bitch out...
ReplyDelete-Who's your mommy
There is a nurse in my ER who cares. She is amazing. She explains that emergency treatment is only a primer to the recovery that comes later. She encourages people to think about how they want to recover, how they will try again. She smiles every day, I don't know how she does it. She only works psych and she has been doing it for years. I send my new nurses to orient with her so they can be inspired to be as compassionate. I truly believe she has made a difference in peoples lives.
