flu announcement

It has been so busy in my ER and I have been so exhausted, I have been neglecting the blog.  The flu is rampant. Of course people are coming in, in droves.

On behalf of ER nurses everywhere I am making the following announcement:

***ATTN ALL THOSE WITH ZERO COPING SKILLS****

YES THE FLU SUCKS. EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT.  IF YOU HAVE THE FLU, KEEP YOUR
SORRY BUTT AT HOME.  MY CO-WORKERS AND I DON'T WANT TO GET IT. THE PEOPLE IN THE LOBBY DON'T WANT TO GET IT.

*****LISTEN CLOSELY****

THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT YOUR CASE OF FLU EXCEPT THROW SOME

PROBABLY USELESS TAMIFLU YOUR WAY. (I wish that shit was OTC) SO DON"T COME TO

THE ER. I REPEAT: DON'T COME INTO THE ER.  WE ARE ALREADY BUSY WITH THE

ELDERLY, CHRONICALLY ILL, KIDS WITH THE FLU WHO REALLY NEED OUR HELP.  WE

DON'T NEED YOU TAKING UP A BED BECAUSE YOU CAN'T COPE.

THAT IS ALL.

girlvet,

I spent some time working in the prison system, and was surprised by how many inmates wanted to come to health care and "share" their illness with everyone between their housing units and our clinic area. For the most part, our advice was the same as yours: "stay home." Unless they were in a severe situation that warranted an ER (by medical staff standards), there was not a whole lot we could do for them.

Does your ER (or do you) take a position on getting the flu shots in light of all of the discussion about their effectiveness?

Thanks for the education you slide in with the humor. :)
